  • So basically, if any new entry in the Smash series would happen to have a very similar (if not the same) movement options, while still being more accessible to new players to practice, Melee would end up being officially obsolete?

In a way, it’s a real shame Sakurai just doesn’t like wavedashing and L-cancelling. Otherwise he would have kept those mechanics in all of the games post Melee because he hates the competitive scene.

  • It seems Melee is to him as Skyrim is to me. I’ve poured more time into it than game other game, but it ain’t my favorite

  • Yeah, I would. If that small, specific part of the game was so enjoyable that I enjoyed it more so than all other games, I would call it my favourite. It’s no more or less logical to instead critique the whole game to see if it’s still your favourite. Preferences don’t need to be ‘logical’.

  • I've always liked Ultimate's movement personally. I'm not a top level competitive player but am simultaneously not interested in only casual party gameplay. I enjoy weeklies and the like, and honestly I'm kinda glad there's no super high skill ceiling for basic movement. I've always found competitive melee quite boring to watch with all the movement, it all just looks like a blur to me and then Fox shoots off the stage at 50% and dies because Marth decided to touch the ledge. I've always appreciated a more calculated slower approach to games and I think limited movement helps with that play. You can't zoom around the stage at mach speeds with wavedashes and shit, so you have to make the most of the movement options you do have.
Plus, I feel super technical movement only favours one type of character, that being Rushdowns. There's a reason most of Melee's top tiers are extremely aggressive characters, the only exceptions being ICs who only exist because one mistake from those hyper aggressive characters is a stock, and Jiggs who exists to shut down that movement. I'm simply not a fan of that. Can you imagine trying to play Bowser when Joker can wavedash around you and edge cancel his extremely powerful Arsene aerials? Can you imagine trying to play Villager when people just zoom by your tree with a lightning fast Cpt. Falcon nair before following up with a 60% combo that ends in Knee of Justice?

  • You seem to be forgetting how before the release of literally every smash game since melee, the entire community comes together to hope that the new smash game's single player content is as good as melee's. I've seen it personally happen with sm4sh and Sm4.5h and I'd imagine it happened with brawl for obvious reasons.

  • Melee is honestly way over hyped. It’s just objectively not as well made as the more recent games. It’s horribly imbalanced, not very approachable, most of the tech relies on unintended programming issues, has less characters, less options and techniques, etc. this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it, but when people say Melee is the best Smash game or “the perfect game” it’s disingenuous and shows nostalgia and purism more than anything.
It’s still a fun game though

  • The difference isn’t casual vs competitive. The difference is young vs old. Ultimate is more forgiving to younger players. I guess same can be said for smash brawl and smash 4.

  • Wow I thought it would be 40 minutes of someone making excuses for their favorite game, but instead I got to understand both sides of the argument.
I feel like people either love the game or hate it, the portion that can come to an agreement on these concepts must be small cause I never see it.

  • given the history of smash i think i can confidently say that smash ultimate is the ultimate smash game.
Dont get me wrong, melee is obviously great, with his high skill sealing and janky controls, and everything, but smash ultimate is just what id call the definitive version. Especially with all the DLC coming out.
maybe if melee had more development time it could have been really, really good.

  • Regardless of personal opinions and all that, the fact that sakuri (who by ultimate's development knows perfectly well about the sort of cheese and broken nature of melee) refined the game to not include these game breaking moves shows even he thinks melee is a broken mess only kept alive by the community exploiting it. Its basiclly the equivalent of me using a money duplication glitch in an online multiplayer game.

  • My only major complaint about ultimate is that when you unlock a character in WoL when you unlock a character, you unlock it in the main game too, so you only have to legitimately unlock like 6 characters.

  • I love ultimate but my god why does it feel like the last thing the online mode wants you to do is try and play multiple characters? Seems counterintuitive.

  • Tbh I absolutely love melee and I’ve gone back to it many times just for the sake of playing it, even without knowing all the jank and awesome tech it was by far my favourite game as a kid and will always be one of the most memorable and beloved games of my childhood even if it wasn’t perfect.

    McguffinTeWaffle July 12, 2020 5:06 am Reply
  • Ultimate only has 6 frames of input lag

  • My favorite Smash games are probably 64 and Ultimate. 64 is slower than Melee, so the lack of a buffer is a little less jarring to me (whos first video game was Super Mario Galaxy). And Ultimate, while definitely more simplistic than Melee, can still have plenty of depth. You have to know specifically how long a move locks your opponent in hitstun, and how long you'll be locked in end lag, in order to combo properly. I consider myself to be a "very low level comp player." Somewhere between shit teir and low tier. I know the basic mechanics and am trying to get better, but I'm terrible at hitting more difficult to do things consistently.

    I find tilts difficult

because you cant to it by pushing the stick all the way. And tiltstick screws with my already-established muscle memory (I'm a K. Rool player)

  • I respect that you find melee the best smash game, and that's fine it's an opinion, but the fact that you state ultimates "shortcomings" As being more friendly to casual players and not having the exact same form of movement as melee just seems silly to me. It seems like you think ultimate is worse because it's not melee when no game could be like melee because they're all supposed to be different from each other. It's not just roster size that makes me feel like melee is a worse smash game, it's the fact that it has such a high learning curve that takes months to overcome, which just seems useless to me because, if you have no mode of transportation, you wouldn't be able to compete in tournaments and win prizes money or trophies, so why sink months or possibly years of time into this game just to get semi good and possibly win a couple matches against another player online. And before you reply something, I know he addressed the fact that if it's not your thing then it isn't worth it, but I still find my point valid in a way. I still love your content but the hate towards ultimate because it isn't melee seems ignorant.

  • Something interesting I noticed as a big fan of Dark Souls 3 is that the very large buffer in a way forces you to be more precise with your inputs. Because of how large the buffer is if a spam a button like roll or attack, it will carry out that action. It forces you to be precise because if spam the attack button 3 times against the boss where the opening only allows 2, you will get stuck in animation of that swing and the boss will punish you for it. Souls series uses that huge buffer to beat the habit of button spamming out of you
